LinkedIn QR codes

A LinkedIn QR code holds the link to their LinkedIn profile: linkedin.com/in/ followed by their profile name, for example linkedin.com/in/olena-k. LinkedIn adds tracking text to the end of the link, and met.cards removes it.

The code doesn’t hold their name, email or phone number. So it’s a profile link code, and you type the name.

On an iPhone or an Android phone:

  1. Open LinkedIn and tap the search bar at the top.
  2. Tap the QR code icon at the right of the search bar.
  3. Open the My code tab. (The Scan tab is for scanning someone else.)

Apps move these screens between versions. If the steps don’t match their app, look for a QR code icon on their profile or in their settings. Scan it from Capture in QR mode.

Last checked: not yet on a phone. These steps follow the app’s own help and may differ in their version.

met.cards shows the LinkedIn icon and their profile name, and asks for a name: “LinkedIn codes share a profile, not a name. Add their name so you can find them later.” Save works once you’ve typed one.

  • Their LinkedIn profile, under Profiles on their page, with Open in LinkedIn.
  • The name you type. Their job title and company are on the profile they’re showing you; add them with Edit.

Their email and phone number aren’t in the code. Ask for them, or scan their paper card as well.

met.cards never looks people up on LinkedIn, and no setting changes that. Type their name; it’s on the profile they’re showing you.

  • You’re on a computer, with their profile link. Paste it on Capture instead. See Paste a link.
  • The link starts with lnkd.in. That’s a LinkedIn short link, and only LinkedIn can tell whose it is. met.cards shows LinkedIn contact and saves it as a link only: select Type their name or Photograph their screen.
  • The code is for a company page. A link to a LinkedIn company page isn’t a person, so met.cards shows This code isn’t a contact. Ask them for the code from their own profile.
  • Nothing happens. Ask them to turn their screen brightness up, and tilt your phone so their screen doesn’t reflect the lights. Or take a photo of the code and pick it with the gallery button in QR mode.
  • They change their profile link later. LinkedIn lets people change the name in their link. The saved link then stops opening them. Change it on their page. See Profiles.
  • You already have them. As you type their name, met.cards suggests people you already have whose name matches what you typed, under Already in your connections? Select Add to on the right person, for example Add to Olena Koval, to add this LinkedIn profile to them instead of saving someone new. See When you already have them.
