Mastodon

A Mastodon profile link is the address of their server followed by /@ and their username, for example mastodon.social/@olena. met.cards saves the handle as username and server together, such as [email protected].

met.cards recognises a Mastodon link from these servers: mastodon.social, mastodon.online, mstdn.social, mastodon.world, fosstodon.org, hachyderm.io and infosec.exchange. A contact card that marks a link as Mastodon is recognised on any server.

The link doesn’t hold their name, email or phone number. So it’s a profile link, and you type the name.

How they show their code depends on the Mastodon app they use. Usually it’s on their profile, under share. Scan it from Capture in QR mode. If their app has no code, ask for their profile link and use Paste a link.

Last checked: not yet on a phone. These steps follow the app’s own help and may differ in their version.

met.cards shows the Mastodon icon and their handle, and asks for a name: “Mastodon codes share a profile, not a name. Add their name so you can find them later.” Save works once you’ve typed one.

  • Their Mastodon profile, under Profiles on their page, with Open in Mastodon.
  • The name you type. Add their company, title or email later with Edit.

met.cards doesn’t fill in the name or photo from Mastodon today. A lookup of Mastodon’s public profile is planned. It will be off until a workspace admin switches it on.

  • It says the code isn’t a contact. Their server isn’t one met.cards recognises from a link alone, so it can’t tell that the link is a Mastodon profile. Type their name and select Save as note: the link is kept in the note on the new person.
  • Nothing happens. Ask them to turn their screen brightness up, and tilt your phone so their screen doesn’t reflect the lights. Or take a photo of the code and pick it with the gallery button in QR mode.
  • You already have them. As you type their name, met.cards suggests people you already have whose name matches what you typed, under Already in your connections? Select Add to on the right person, for example Add to Olena Koval, to add this Mastodon profile to them instead of saving someone new. See When you already have them.
